The news from SWL F14368 for year 2026

Dear SWL friends, soon we are in 2026 i will wich you happy new year only in 2026. I have decide tostop to organize SWL contest because its a big work to do it. For the SSB SWL contest many sponsors and not many participation from SWL. Some SWL make me problems and also few sponsors !!! But lot of sponsors ans SWL was nice. I was a sponsor and send a gift to a listener but this listener never receive the gift in the box... i send via french post office, for a small radio to send outside or europe the price is 35 Euros so like 40 US dollars. its really expensive. So i loose 80 Euros... Try to organise a SWL contest and find sponsors. You will see its a big work. The last AM radio contest they have 35 participation, so it was the best SWL contest in the world. I will spend my time now with my 5 blogs and my facebook, i have a facebook group for listeners. I listen AM radio stations in AM modes in MW and SW. I listen also amateur radio bands in SSB. Radio wave is a vast world with many frequencies, modes, etc. With a kiwi sdr you can decode many modes. They are pirates radios, utility stations and many more. I start to be a cb operator in 1980 and in 1981 a SWL. During few years i have stop to be a SWL because lot of QRM force me to stop my hobby... Now i listen with a web sdr and i am happy with this. As a old man i am not healty and always stay at home so my computer is my best friend. So even i dont organize SWL contests i are here and hope to have contacts and share with you our love for our hobby. Have a happy end of this year 2025 and best 73. Frank SWL

What's a Shortwave Utility station ?

"A utility is the jargon for any radio station on the short wave band that is not for the public's entertainment or hobby. All those huge gaps on your shortwave radio, the ones between broadcast and amateur bands, are utility bands allocated by international treaties.

The word "utility" comes more or less from the original Latin for "usefulness." With very few exceptions, these radio communications are most certainly being used as part of some mission or task, known or unknown.

Utilities are harder to hear than broadcasts, but they're way more fun. You'll find all the world's militaries, ships, aircraft, spies, bootleggers, embassies, and anyone else who needs to communicate over the horizon. While satellites are often primary, the failure of Galaxy IV shows once again why many people want a shortwave backup. If your radio has a "USB" or "CW" setting, you're ready to give utilities a try.

The Utility Planet column and its web site are intended as friendly, jargon-free clearinghouses for utility information, so you'll hear more signals and fewer odd noises. In other words, you folks write both of them."
