NORTHERN IRELAND, GI. From June 20 until June 20, 2027, the special callsign GB5NCL is active

from the industrial port town of Larne (on the east coast of County Antrim, one of Northern

Ireland's six counties), the region's link to Scotland. The special callsign celebrates

historical ties between northeastern County Antrim and western Scotland, notably

Robert the Bruce's crossing of the "North Channel" in 1306 and the ancient kingdom of Dalriada.

It also commemorates the wireless telegraphy link established by Marconi in 1898 between

Ballycastle and Rathlin Island—the first commercial use of this technology in Ireland.
