…from 1973 to 2007, the “Amitié-Radio” Club, a group of passionate SWLs…
The Amitié-Radio Club was a club of French and Francophone listeners eager to discover and
exchange information on international radio stations, primarily shortwave,
broadcast, and utility stations (naval, aeronautical, official services), their transmission methods, etc. Roland Paget, who presided over the club, created two regular magazines:
“Listening to the World”: a periodical publication of international radio broadcasts (the last issue
was No. 163, September/October 2007)
“Radio Panorama”: an 8-page monthly bulletin listing all international French-language broadcasts
in the world on shortwave and mediumwave, the latest
news on Francophone broadcasting, and classified ads.
In 1975, upon my return from a year in Ireland, I became interested again in Shortwave radio,
which I had abandoned after my military service, during which I was a radio operator and teletypewriter
at a headquarters base of the 2nd Tactical Air Force, Air Base 128 Mets-Frescaty. Buying
a Grundig Satellite receiver at a flea market, and discovering a special issue of Télérama magazine
dedicated to various aspects of radio, I learned of the existence of the Amitié-Radio club, the largest
in France, and I joined immediately. At the same time, I received from the administration
the call sign F11ECZ.
This would be the beginning of 15 studious years devoted to shortwave radio, listening to and decoding
utility stations (my favorite area), until I passed the amateur radio exam. Within the club, many of us contribute to the various sections of the magazine with our regular reports, which we then send to Joerg Klingenfuss, the author of the famous books for headphones, these veritable "bibles" of shortwave frequencies, covering broadcasting stations, professional utility stations, weather stations, etc. Our contributions could be used to enrich the sections of his various books: "Utility Guide," "RadioFax Guide," "Shortwave Guide," and "RadioTelex Messages."
