Radio Caroline Annual Fundraiser
Radio Caroline Annual Fundraiser
Dear Radio Caroline supporter,
Join us on Friday, August 7th for our Annual Four Day Fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Ross Revenge Dry Dock Charity Appeal.
Radio Caroline North will be live from Ross Revenge on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Album Channel will be playing the Radio Caroline Listener Top 500 Countdown on all four days of the Fundraiser starting at 9:00am each day.
It's going to finish with the Number One being played on Monday evening during Rob Ashard's and Ray Copeland's Fundraiser Wrap Up Show.
This year we will have THREE unique gifts for you, each featuring our brand new Ross Revenge artwork.
The Listener Top 500 has been compiled based on the most played tracks on our daily Listener Top 15 shows over the past five years.
Donate £30 or more - or join the Radio Caroline Support Group for a minimum monthly donation of £7.50 - and you'll get the t-shirt, or
Donate £40 or more and you'll get an attractive A1 size Listener Top 500 souvenir poster - listing all the tracks, or
Donate £60 or more and you'll get our stylish new embroidered sweatshirt.
If you order two or more different items in the same donation you'll get a £10 discount.
There will be no postage or packing charges for delivery anywhere in the world.
In addition to the normal men's fit, the t-shirts will be available in a women's fit, featuring a scooped neckline.
The sweatshirts will feature a crew neckline and an embroidered emblem on the chest, suitable for both women and men.
The t-shirt will be available in a choice of Black and Dark Grey, and the sweatshirt will be available in a choice of Navy Blue and Light Grey.
We are not planning to publish the Listener Top 500 online, and so ordering the poster as a souvenir will be the only way to have your own personal record of the tracks and their chart positions.
The t-shirt is only going to be available if you donate or join the Radio Caroline Support Group - and the poster and sweatshirt if you donate - during the four days of the Fundraiser, Friday August 7th to midnight UK time on Monday August 10th.
If you join the Support Group by monthly donation, you will also receive immediately by email our July Quarterly Newsletter and all future editions until you may choose to terminate your donations at any time.
You will be able to donate or join the Support Group and choose not to receive a gift, if you prefer. Donations of any amount will always be gratefully received.
The t-shirts, posters and sweatshirts will be printed and sent out by our supplier in Northern Ireland. This will likely avoid customs duties for deliveries to the EU, and of course there will be no duty for UK deliveries. We will absorb the 10% tariff for delivery to the USA.
100% of the initial proceeds from our Annual Fundraiser will be given to our Charity Appeal to get Ross Revenge into dry dock.
The subsequent proceeds from new monthly memberships of the Radio Caroline Support Group will be used to fund the expansion and ongoing running costs of the radio station.
You can get all the details of the Ross Revenge Dry Dock Appeal here and by going to rossrevengeofficial.com.
If you have any questions feel free to email us at rcsg@radiocaroline.co.uk
Best regards,

SWL contest project for 2027
I'm already thinking about the 2027 SWL contest! This year, the focus will be on listening to amateur radio bands from 10 to 160 meters using SSB.
There will be a winter segment in January and February 2027 covering the 40, 80, and 160-meter bands, as conditions on these bands are better in winter. Listening on the 160 meter will receive more points. I will explain this later.
The summer segment will cover the 10, 15, and 20-meter bands in SSB during July and August 2027. The goal, of course, will be to hear as many DXCC entities as possible. Listening on the 10 meter (28 MHz) will give more points. I will explain this later.
You can choose to participate in just one contest or in both the winter and summer events. For the summer contest, IOTA (Islands on the Air) listed islands will be accepted in the log, though this is optional. Consequently, there will be three awards: one for the winter contest, one for the summer contest, and one for the summer contest that also includes IOTA island groups.
The rules for the winter contest will be published in November 2026, and those for the summer contest in May 2027.
The aim is simply to enjoy listening for DXCC entities and IOTA islands. If you have no prior experience with amateur radio listening, everything will be explained to you.
Beginners how to easily listen to radio amateurs bands ?
There are fewer and fewer AM radio stations to listen to on shortwave these days. However, on the HF bands using Single Sideband (SSB), there are 340 DXCC entities and 1,200 IOTA-listed island groups to discover! You can also receive some beautiful QSL cards.
Even if you don't speak English, you only need to learn a few very short phrases. Amateur radio operators often keep their QSOs (contacts) very brief in order to reach as many stations as possible.
Back in the 90s, after listening to AM broadcast stations (BCL), I started listening to amateur radio bands and IOTA stations myself. I have confirmed 250 DXCC entities and 330 IOTA islands via paper QSL cards.
There you have it—I hope these contests interest you. 73 from Frank (SWL F14368), organizer of the SWL CONTESTs since 2023.
This contest will be open exclusively to SWLs. However, a licensed radio amateur may participate as an SWL.
VK9XY DXpedition to Christmas Island in November 2026
… coming soon: the VK9XY DXpedition to Christmas Island, led by young operators …
From November 16 to December 4, the VK9XY DXpedition—themed "The Next Generation Takes the Helm"—is taking place,
organized by the Pacific Islands DXpedition Group (PIDXG) and the "Youth on the Air" (YOTA) program.
A statement from the team reads: "Throughout our recent DXpeditions, the role of young operators has steadily grown;
for the first time, the veterans are acting solely as a support crew, while the team on the island consists
entirely of eight operators under the age of 25, led by team leader Max N4ML."
Seasoned DXers Glenn W0GJ and Gregg W6IZT are joining the team as on-site advisors
and mentors. Confirmed members also include Connor W4IPC, Tyler NT1S, Lukas LY7J,
and Urgent 7Q6UJ. Gregg W6IZT notes, "My role is not to get in the way; these young operators have earned the right
to take the helm. Glenn and I are here to guide the team through the planning process,
not to direct operations."
The setup includes four on-site stations, plus two remote stations and one station operating via QO-100. The team will
also participate in the CQWW CW contest. The Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF) is funding the two
remote stations (NexGenRiB2); thanks to a Starlink connection, these will allow 30 to 40 additional
young operators around the world to take control (using CW keys and microphones) of the
VK9XY station.
Whether on the island or across the globe, this activation is led by youth for youth; it perfectly
embodies the organizers' mission: "to enable the next generation of amateur radio operators to participate in DXpeditions." QSL via MØOXO (Charles Wilmott). See the website:

The two main problems of SWL (shortwave listeners an MW listeners)
In the 80s, the major problem of QRM (interference) RFI wasn't a problem because there were no computers, no plasma TV screens, no powerline communication, no internet routers, and no LED light bulbs. In 2026, it's really rare not to have QRM, especially if you live in an apartment with neighbors. Personally, I suddenly had an S9 QRM that forced me to stop being a shortwave listener (SWL), even though I had a good antenna on the roof of the building housing the apartments. This QRM was coming through the building's 220-volt electrical current. I asked the authorities to come and try to find the source of the QRM, but at that time I wasn't yet a licensed amateur radio operator, and when they saw that it was coming from the electrical current and probably from faulty ventilation systems on the roof of the building next to my antenna or a neighbor's, they told me they couldn't do anything.
