History of Turner Microphones

 http://www.cbgazette.com/history_tommoss-turner.html

The Turner Microphone company was founded by David Turner and Everett Foster in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1931. The company soon began making microphones and public address systems. Turner opened a larger factory in 1936 and produced a large quantity of microphones and grew to 1200 employees by the 1970s. The company was sold to Telex in 1978 and ceased operations in 1979.[3

https://www.thegazette.com/community/history-happenings-cedar-rapids-company-led-the-way-on-microphones/

https://www.radiomuseum.org/dsp_hersteller_detail.cfm?company_id=3660

The Turner Co. Cedar Rapids Iowa, USA: David Turner was working on an idea for producing public address systems for funeral homes like his father operated. The basement workshop effort of 1931 was to blossom into quite an industry. The company was famous with their microphones. In the mid-1930’s, David Turner developed a pressure embalming system that revolutionized the little-discussed art. The pressure system of introducing the embalming fluid replaced the old-fashioned gravity flow system.

1936 "The Turner Co." built the first part of its factory in northeast Cedar Rapids and soon it had to expand (in two steps). In 1940 there were about 35 employees. During World War II employment jumped to 210 (about 85 percent were women). An extra building was leased at 1443 First avenue SE. (Now occupied by "The Music Loft." The plant on Seventeenth street was enlarged in 1946. Evans became president of the Company in 1946 when David Turner assumed the chairmanship of the company's board of directors.

1950 the Turner Company in Cedar Rapids manufactured 80,000 microphones and 1,093 embalming machines.

In 1967 the Turner Co. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Conrac Corp. and in December 1971 became a division of Conrac. The Turner Division’s line of microphones were then made for use in communications systems, such as two-way radios, citizen band equipment and ham radio operations; all kinds of microphones for public address systems; and professional broadcast and recording microphones, for radio and television stations, recording studios and the like.

In August 1979, Conrac sold it Telex Corporation. A scant three months later all production at the main plant, 716 Oakland Rd., in Cedar Rapids was discontinued and relocated to Telex facilities in Minnesota and Oklahoma.

History of HITACHI radios from JAPAN

Hitachi was founded in 1910 by Namihei Odaira born on January 15, 1874 who graduated in

engineering in 1900 After graduation, he joined a mining company as an engineer

in its power plant.

https://social-innovation.hitachi/en/article/odaira-namihei-150/

Namihei Odaira was born in 1874 in Ienaka Village (present-day Tochigi City), Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. When he was a student, he chose to study electrical engineering. In 1910, at a time when Japan was dependent on foreign technology, he founded Hitachi, Ltd. with the aspiration of producing electrical machinery in Japan.

The first product manufactured under Odaira's direction was a 5-horsepower motor. This is the oldest existing motor designed and manufactured by a Japanese person. It has been carefully preserved along with the engineering drawings, and in June 2023, it was designated an Important Cultural Property as “5-horsepower Induction Motor and the 5 design sheets.”

Taking advantage of the production of this five-horsepower induction motor, Hitachi workers collaborated with their colleagues on various projects under the corporate philosophy of “Contributing to society through the development of superior, original technology and products.”

From there he moved on to various electric power companies. In 1906 he joined Kuhara Mining

Company in Hitachi1 copper mine as head of engineering section. Although his

main tasks in the mine were to ensure a stable supply of electricity and maintain the

electrical equipment of the mine, he and his colleagues began work on the production of

a five horsepower electric motor.2

Subsequently, in 1920 this structure broke away from the mother factory3 and was established

Hitachi, Ltd was established as an independent company Odaira served as CEO of

Hitachi from 1910 to 1929 and president from 1929 to 1947

After the Second World War, for "political" opportunities, Odaira was sent away until early 19514

but he remained practically for a short time since in October at the age of 77 he died.

As is our habit we will focus our attention on the technical aspect of the Hitachi

we deliberately leave out the story of the metamorphosis undergone by the company over the years

from the point of view of the corporate structure with mergers and divestitures.

Today Hitachi is a multinational that controls around 800 companies covering multiple fields

of electronics,5 but I started as a small group that took care of the maintenance of the electrical department

as part of a Fusanosuke Kuhara mining company in Hitachi

Radio production

Hitachi's range of radio production was very profitable in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The year of 2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Namihei Odaira, the founder of Hitachi, Ltd. To commemorate this, “Namihei Odaira 150th Anniversary Exhibition - Namihei Odaira: An Honest Person” is being held at Hitachi Origin Park in Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, from January 15.

This special exhibition focuses on the term “honest person,” with “honesty” being part of the values that Odaira cherished throughout his life, so as to zoom in on the man himself. Tsutomu Ogane, director of Hitachi Origin Park, says: “By letting people know the thoughts of our founder, we want them to get a feel for the origin of Hitachi's social innovation business, which we are developing globally.”

Make a easy and cheap price antenna to listen AM radios in medium wave

"This DIY AM antenna is best used outdoors but you can make it work inside by somehow re-routing the wires. It amplifies all weak AM signals, so a powerful local station might be heard over your entire AM radio dial."

For LW and MW they are indoor antennas, in the past it was possible to find many brands but now only few.

https://icomjapan.blogspot.com/2023/10/antenna-is-most-important-for-listener.html

For the shortwave bands 3 to 30 MHz they are a lot of choice.

You can use the loop antenna to listen LW, MW and SW and keep indoor or outdoor.

The MLA 30 is very popular for listeners because of the cheap price around 30 US Dollars

You must visit my articles ( from my 3 blogs )

Also a good link

 https://hamsignal.com/blog/mla-30-magnetic-loop-antenna-review-and-comparison

You can buy the MLA-30 on internet like aliexpres, ebay, amazon, etc

"So, what is the verdict on the MLA-30?

Even though the claim is that the antenna is broadband, I believe this antenna has been response optimized for the casual AM broadcast listener.  That is not to say it does not work outside of the AM band.  It will certainly work for receiving signals up to 15 MHz (the point where I stopped the study), but the signals will not be as easy to hear because of the high noise floor and sometimes signals will not be at all intelligible due to intermodular distortion.  Below the AM band, the MLA-30 simply does not work unless the signal is from a very strong station as was the case with my airport beacon test.

If you are just looking for an antenna to listen to local AM broadcasts, at $43, the MLA-30 is hard to beat from the perspective of price. The antenna's ability to null out local noise sources is also a positive for those interested in AM listening.  However, if pulling weak signals out of a noisy RF band is what you are looking for, the MLA-30 falls a bit short of the mark.  In that case, the more expensive antennas like the Wellbrook and  are the way to go."

https://hamsignal.com/blog/mla-30-magnetic-loop-antenna-review-and-comparison

They are lot of loop antennas for listeners but also for amateur radio opérators. Price can be very expensive

Price can be near 2000 US Dollars !!!

Look expensive LOOP antenna for SWL

For Amateur radio

A nice antenna for amateur radio ( QRP ) or listener

Magnetic Loop Antenna is one of the best solution for all HAM's or listeners (SWL's) who don't have an access to the large space for the dipole or a long wire antenna, also for those of you who wants to operate indoors of the house, hotel or from the beach on vacation. This Loop doesn't need any grounding or counterpoise and work properly also from a very low hights. The main advantages of my Magloops are: lightweight body, small size, quick and easy setup and possibility to use this antenna also in an indoor conditions.

With a TESCUN PL-330

Paul was a nice sponsor for the SWL contest 2023, he his in Europe. You can visit is web site and maybe ask questions about this loop antenna to use for listening only.
