Who is the patron saint of radio amateurs?

I was surprised to discover that radio amateurs have their own saint: Father Massimiliano Kolbe, call sign SP3RN. Kolbe is also the patron saint of journalists and political prisoners.

Maximilian Maria Kolbe, born Rajmund Kolbe (Zduńska Wola, January 8, 1894 – Auschwitz, August 14, 1941), was a Polish priest and Franciscan friar who offered to take the place of a father destined for the hunger bunker in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Maximilian Maria Kolbe was beatified in 1971 by Pope Paul VI, who called him “martyr of love”, and then proclaimed a Saint in 1982 by Pope John Paul II.

On August 14, Father Massimiliano Kolbe  Ham Radio callsign SP3RN  is remembered as the Saint Patron of Radio Amateurs.

To recall the day of his martyrdom (Auschwitz, August 14, 1941),  a special radio callsign for the

Aniversary of Saint Maximilian KolbeSaint Patron of Hamradio operators, Radioclub Islas Canarias has been awarded a special callsign EG8HKT , Hermano Kolbe Tenerife to be on air during the week of August 14th to 18th.

Thanks to the Radio Club, the  local Hamradio operators remark  the existance of an image of the Saint in the island of Tenerife. The image is located in the Hermitage of Nuestra Sra. de Guadalupe, Casas de la Cumbre, in the area of Anaga, in Tenerife, Canary Islands.

On 10 October 1982, Pope John Paul II canonized Kolbe and declared him a martyr of charity.[2] The Catholic Church venerates him as the patron saint of amateur radio operators, drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, and prisoners.[3] John Paul II declared him "the patron of our difficult century".[4][5] His feast day is 14 August, the day of his martyrdom.

IOTA Island Group Listings

"IOTA is an exciting and innovative activity programme that has caught the interest of thousands of radio amateurs worldwide. Established in 1964, it promotes radio contacts with stations located on islands around the world to enrich the experience of all active on the amateur bands and, to do this, it draws on the widespread mystique surrounding islands. It is administered by Islands On The Air (IOTA) Ltd (called here IOTA Management) in partnership with the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB).

IOTA Management has grouped the oceans' islands into some 1200 'IOTA groups' with, for reasons of geography, varying numbers of 'counters', i.e. qualifying islands, in each group and has published the listings in the IOTA Directory and on the IOTA website. The objective, for the IOTA Island Chaser, is to make radio contact with at least one counter in as many of these groups as possible and, for the IOTA Island Activator, to provide such island contacts. The programme has a strong rule structure. IOTA Management encourages friendly competition among chasers by publishing details of participants' performance in an Honour Roll and annual listings, as well as by recognising it with certificates and prestige awards."

History of IOTA

https://www.iota-world.org/history.html

In 1964 a British Short Wave Listener, Geoff Watts (now sadly a Silent Key) started an activity programme based on contacting island groups around the world. Geoff was not a wealthy man and had little opportunity to travel himself, but it is clear that listening to amateurs operating from remote island locations captured his imagination. Thus the Islands on the Air (IOTA) programme was born.

The main meeting frequency for IOTA is 14.260MHz.
 Other ones on SSB are:
28.560
28.460
 24.950
 21.260
18.128
