… March 10th, news from operators on Bouvet …
Despite favorable weather conditions, the weather is currently characterized by strong winds and rain,
making movement and access to the outdoors difficult. The 160m antenna broke today, and the 20m Yagi is also damaged and unusable. We have spare parts, but it is currently
too dangerous to deploy the Yagi antenna due to these high winds. We will do so as soon as the weather
permits. One of the smaller tents was also damaged by the weather.
For radio and sleeping, we use large, sturdy tents from the Norwegian brand Arctic Lavvo.
They have already proven their wind resistance during the previous 3Y0J trip and have not caused any problems
so far. The damage will not impact operations for the time being; we have
spare tents that will be set up in case of further damage. Current forecasts predict this type of weather until the end of the week, which suggests further possibilities for intervention.
This morning, we received food from the ship. It's not every day you get a pizza delivered by helicopter to Bouvetøya! The operators, who have been living on combat rations since their arrival on Saturday the 28th to allow you to operate this new band, were delighted. Every day, we receive three combat rations from a Norwegian manufacturer. We have a communal tent where we gather for meals and discuss radio, as well as other topics.
Our daily schedule is based on a 6-hour shift, allowing us to work at different times and experiment with various propagation conditions and bands. Last night, a good opening appeared on 160m; therefore, it is a priority to install this antenna as soon as the weather permits.
Currently, 6 to 7 stations are operational and we will maintain them this way until the end of the week.
Partial dismantling is likely if a favorable weather window presents itself this weekend or early next week. We have recorded over 70,000 contacts to date. 73, 3YØK.
