History of HITACHI radios from JAPAN

Hitachi was founded in 1910 by Namihei Odaira born on January 15, 1874 who graduated in

engineering in 1900 After graduation, he joined a mining company as an engineer

in its power plant.

https://social-innovation.hitachi/en/article/odaira-namihei-150/

Namihei Odaira was born in 1874 in Ienaka Village (present-day Tochigi City), Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. When he was a student, he chose to study electrical engineering. In 1910, at a time when Japan was dependent on foreign technology, he founded Hitachi, Ltd. with the aspiration of producing electrical machinery in Japan.

The first product manufactured under Odaira's direction was a 5-horsepower motor. This is the oldest existing motor designed and manufactured by a Japanese person. It has been carefully preserved along with the engineering drawings, and in June 2023, it was designated an Important Cultural Property as “5-horsepower Induction Motor and the 5 design sheets.”

Taking advantage of the production of this five-horsepower induction motor, Hitachi workers collaborated with their colleagues on various projects under the corporate philosophy of “Contributing to society through the development of superior, original technology and products.”

From there he moved on to various electric power companies. In 1906 he joined Kuhara Mining

Company in Hitachi1 copper mine as head of engineering section. Although his

main tasks in the mine were to ensure a stable supply of electricity and maintain the

electrical equipment of the mine, he and his colleagues began work on the production of

a five horsepower electric motor.2

Subsequently, in 1920 this structure broke away from the mother factory3 and was established

Hitachi, Ltd was established as an independent company Odaira served as CEO of

Hitachi from 1910 to 1929 and president from 1929 to 1947

After the Second World War, for "political" opportunities, Odaira was sent away until early 19514

but he remained practically for a short time since in October at the age of 77 he died.

As is our habit we will focus our attention on the technical aspect of the Hitachi

we deliberately leave out the story of the metamorphosis undergone by the company over the years

from the point of view of the corporate structure with mergers and divestitures.

Today Hitachi is a multinational that controls around 800 companies covering multiple fields

of electronics,5 but I started as a small group that took care of the maintenance of the electrical department

as part of a Fusanosuke Kuhara mining company in Hitachi

Radio production

Hitachi's range of radio production was very profitable in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The year of 2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Namihei Odaira, the founder of Hitachi, Ltd. To commemorate this, “Namihei Odaira 150th Anniversary Exhibition - Namihei Odaira: An Honest Person” is being held at Hitachi Origin Park in Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, from January 15.

This special exhibition focuses on the term “honest person,” with “honesty” being part of the values that Odaira cherished throughout his life, so as to zoom in on the man himself. Tsutomu Ogane, director of Hitachi Origin Park, says: “By letting people know the thoughts of our founder, we want them to get a feel for the origin of Hitachi's social innovation business, which we are developing globally.”

Make a easy and cheap price antenna to listen AM radios in medium wave

"This DIY AM antenna is best used outdoors but you can make it work inside by somehow re-routing the wires. It amplifies all weak AM signals, so a powerful local station might be heard over your entire AM radio dial."

MFJ ceases on-site production in Starkville, Mississippi

MFJ ceases on-site production in Starkville, Mississippi

Sad message from MFJ USA ( who our nice sponsor for SWL Contest 2023 )
"Dear Fellow Hams and Friends,
April 25, 2024
Dear Fellow Hams and Friends,
It is with a sad heart as I write this letter.
As many of you have heard by now, MFJ is ceasing its on-site production in Starkville, Mississippi on May 17, 2024. This is also the same for our sister companies’ Ameritron, Hygain, Cushcraft, Mirage and Vectronics.
Times have changed since I started this business 52 years ago. Our product line grew and grew and prospered. Covid changed everything in businesses including ours. It was the hardest hit that we have ever had and we never fully recovered.
I turned 80 this year. I had never really considered retirement but life is so short and my time with my family is so precious.
I want to thank all of our employees who have helped build this company with me over the years. We have many employees who have made MFJ their career for 10, 20, 30, 40 and more years.
We are going to continue to sell MFJ products past May 17, 2024. We have a lot of stock on hand. We will continue to offer repair service work for out-of-warranty and in-warranty units for the foreseeable future.
Finally, a special thanks to all of our customers and our dealers who have made MFJ a worldwide name and a profitable business for so many years. You all are so much appreciated.
Sincerely Yours, 73s
Martin F. Jue, K5FLU"

Envision MFJ Enterprises, Inc., a corporation that originated from modest beginnings within the confines of a small hotel room in 1972, armed with a singular product and a vision. This paragon of quality and diversity in the realm of Radio Amateur was founded by Martin F. Jue. From its inception in the old Stark Hotel in downtown Starkville, Mississippi, MFJ has grown into a global powerhouse, all while maintaining its core values of dependability and diversity.
The company's journey began with the launch of a high selectivity filter, an innovative product designed to isolate a single Morse code signal from a sea of others. This product was a resounding success, selling thousands of units and laying the foundation for the MFJ we know today.
As the company expanded, so did its need for space. From a small hotel room to a large room in a building on Maxwell Street, then to a 600 square foot trailer, and back to Maxwell Street, MFJ was always on the move. The company's largest expansion came with a move to Louisville Street, where it occupied a building affectionately known as "MFJ Blue" for fifteen years. Today, the main administrative office, along with shipping, warehouse, and production facilities, are housed at 300 Industrial Park Road, a testament to the company's continuous growth.
MFJ's commitment to diversity is a cornerstone of its success. From the President, Martin F. Jue, whose family originally hailed from Cantox, China, to the factory worker, MFJ is a melting pot of cultures and ideas. This diversity extends to the company's product line, which is as varied as its workforce. Whether it's the Metalworks Department, the Antenna Shop, or Mirage Communication's Equipment, MFJ's offerings cater to a wide range of needs and preferences.
Despite initial challenges in gaining the support of dealers and distributors, MFJ's focus on quality and innovation led to a surge in demand for its products. Today, MFJ is represented by over two hundred dealers in the United States, forty overseas, and ten in Canada, with a presence in major cities across the globe.
At the heart of MFJ's success is its commitment to innovation. The company invests heavily in research and development, constantly seeking to create new products that meet the evolving needs of its customers. From letters and phone calls to in-person requests at hamfests, MFJ listens to its customers and uses their feedback to drive product development.
MFJ's commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of its operations. From the metalworking shop to the antenna shop, every product starts as an idea and is brought to life through a rigorous process of design, production, and quality testing. This commitment to quality is encapsulated in the company's slogan, "Making Quality Affordable," which has resonated with the ham radio community.
MFJ's customer service is second to none. The company offers a one-year unconditional warranty, aptly named the "NO MATTER WHAT" warranty, and a toll-free technical help support line for customers needing help or advice with a ham radio project.
As the world of amateur radio continues to grow, so does MFJ. With a continuously expanding base of new ham customers, MFJ is poised to maintain its stature as the World Leader in ham radio accessories, equipment, and service for many years to come. Through its commitment to quality, diversity, and customer service, MFJ embodies the spirit of a dependable, quality-based company with the heart of a Radio Amateur.

My Japanese radio receiver 1981 to 2024

I am not a collector, in 2024 i have only my Sony 7600 but it is out of order. All the rest was sale.

My first in 1981, sanyo RP 8880

History of SANYO brand  https://icomjapan.blogspot.com/2023/08/bis.html

Not a long time later Yaesu 7000

I regrets to have sale this nice receiver !

My first tranceiver Yaesu 707S ( 10 watts )

It was only possible to listen amateur radio bands. I send a réception report to a ham from Andorra and receive my first amateur radio QSL card.

Icom 725 unfortunatly he have some problems but it was nice to use on 11 meter DX !!!

History of ICOM brand  https://icomjapan.blogspot.com/2023/06/history-of-famous-icom-receivers.html

ICOM ICR 70

I keep ( in the 80 and 90's ) it in my parents house and use my CB radio antenna 5/8 wave on the roof to listen.

Icom R75

It was my last Icom receiver

In 2011 i buy a second hand RX ICOM R75 but i dont keep it, too much QRM and my interest to listen SW was not strong at this moment.

Yaesu FRG 8800

I buy it for 200 Euros but only after few months it was KAPOUT...

My best portable radio receiver was a SONY ICF 7600, i bring it to few place in the world. A very good receiver.

My IOTA DX expedition from Philippines DU4/F14368 in my parents in law. I remember i listen on the terrace with a nice view of volcano who can be active...

is an active stratovolcano in the province of Camarines Sur, in the Philippines.

ICOM 1000, 2000 and 5000

I keep the R5000 long time and confirm 250 DXCC with amateur radio and 320 IOTA

I keep short time the R1000 and 2000

Its my best receiver, i buy new in a famous Parisian shop GES with F2YT. I make me a spécial price ! I think price it was like on month of salary in the 80's

My antenna was at 30 meters above ground

https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/sw_ant/1465.html

No QRM !!! No computer screen, internet box, TV plasma, etc

HISTORY of KENWOOD receivers https://icomjapan.blogspot.com/2023/06/history-of-kenwood-shortwave-receivers.html

I has also a old YAESU

I make big mistake because i exchange to my YAESU FRG 7000...

Look begining of YAESU Musen brand

it was with the FT 50

JAPAN was great for HAM radio and SWL équipment

My last TX was a ICOM 706MKIIG in 2022 but this TX is like a heater even you dont transmit !

My antenna was to small so i sale it again ( maybe i am crazy ahahaha )

If he have no heat problem its a wonderfull receiver on HF, UHF, VHF.

30 kHz à 54 MHz and 118 à 180 MHz.

The man who buy me know someone to spot the heat probleme

My dream was a JRC receiver
