Aliexpress.com
AliExpress (Chinese: 全球速卖通) is an online retail service based in China and owned by the Alibaba Group.[1] Launched in 2010,[2][3] it is made up of small businesses in China and other locations, such as Singapore, that offer products to international online buyers. It is the most visited e-commerce website in Russia[4] and was the 10th most popular website in Brazil.[5] It facilitates small businesses to sell to customers all over the world. AliExpress has drawn comparison to eBay, as sellers are independent and use the platform to offer products to buyers.[6][7]
Business model[edit]
AliExpress started as a business-to-business buying and selling portal. It has since expanded to include business-to-consumer, consumer-to-consumer, cloud computing and payment services. As of 2016 AliExpress ran websites in English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Italian, German, Polish, Turkish, Portuguese, Indonesian and Russian languages - English being the default offered to those countries with languages outside the preceding list.[8] AliExpress is often used by e-commerce stores that use a dropship business model.[9]
Sellers on AliExpress can be either companies or individuals. AliExpress is different from Amazon because it acts only as an e-commerce platform and does not itself sell products directly to consumers.[10] It directly connects Chinese businesses with buyers.
Although most of the retailers are Chinese, AliExpress is aimed at international import buyers and does not sell to customers in mainland China.[5] Customers in China use fellow Alibaba-subsidiary Taobao, because of its convenience in delivery and service, especially the payment method, Alipay. The site offers a popular affiliate marketing program where partners are rewarded with a commission on sales for sending visitors to the site.[citation needed]
In November 2020, India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned the AliExpress mobile phone app along with 42 other Chinese apps.[11]
In 2022, the Office of the United States Trade Representative added AliExpress to its list of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy.[12][13]
EBAY in 46 countrys
eBay Inc. (/ˈiːbeɪ/ EE-bay, often stylized as ebay) is an American multinational e-commerce company based in San Jose, California, that facilitates consumer-to-consumer and business-to-consumer sales through its website. eBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar in 1995 and became a notable success story of the dot-com bubble. eBay is a multibillion-dollar business with operations in about 32 countries, as of 2019.[1][2] The company manages the eBay website, an online auction and shopping website in which people and businesses buy and sell a wide variety of goods and services worldwide. The website is free to use for buyers, but sellers are charged fees for listing items after a limited number of free listings, and an additional or separate fee when those items are sold.[3]
In addition to eBay's original auction-style sales, the website has evolved and expanded to include: instant "Buy It Now" shopping; shopping by Universal Product Code, ISBN, or other kind of SKU number (via Half.com, which was shut down in 2017); and other services. eBay previously offered online money transfers as part of its services (via PayPal,[4] which was a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay from 2002 to 2015);[5] online classified advertisements (via Kijiji, or eBay Classifieds Group); and online event ticket trading (via StubHub). On July 25, 2018, eBay announced a new partnership with PayPal's rivals Apple and Square in place of its longtime payment partner PayPal.[6]
PayPal[edit]
On October 3, 2002, PayPal became a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay.[85] Its corporate headquarters were sited in San Jose, California,[86] United States at eBay's North First Street satellite office campus. On September 30, 2014, eBay Inc. announced the divestiture of PayPal as an independent company, which was completed on July 20, 2015.[87]

Amazon.com, Inc.[1] (/ˈæməzɒn/ AM-ə-zon, UK also /ˈæməzən/ AM-ə-zən) is an American multinational technology company focusing on e-commerce, cloud computing, online advertising, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. It has been often referred to as "one of the most influential economic and cultural forces in the world",[5] and is often regarded as one of the world's most valuable brands.[6] It is considered to be one of the Big Five American technology companies, alongside Alphabet (parent company of Google), Apple, Meta and Microsoft.
Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos from his garage in Bellevue, Washington,[7] on July 5, 1994. Initially an online marketplace for books, it has expanded into a multitude of product categories, a strategy that has earned it the moniker The Everything Store.[8] It has multiple subsidiaries including Amazon Web Services (cloud computing), Zoox (autonomous vehicles), Kuiper Systems (satellite Internet), and Amazon Lab126 (computer hardware R&D). Its other subsidiaries include Ring, Twitch, IMDb, and Whole Foods Market. Its acquisition of Whole Foods in August 2017 for US$13.4 billion substantially increased its footprint as a physical retailer.[9]
Amazon has earned a reputation as a disruptor of well-established industries through technological innovation and "aggressive" reinvestment of profits into capital expenditures.[10][11][12][13] As of 2023, it is the world's largest online retailer and marketplace, smart speaker provider, cloud computing service through AWS,[14] live-streaming service through Twitch, and Internet company as measured by revenue and market share.[15] In 2021, it surpassed Walmart as the world's largest retailer outside of China, driven in large part by its paid subscription plan, Amazon Prime, which has over 200 million subscribers worldwide.[16][17] It is the second-largest private employer in the United States.[18]
Amazon also distributes a variety of downloadable and streaming content through its Amazon Prime Video, MGM+, Amazon Music, Twitch, and Audible units. It publishes books through its publishing arm, Amazon Publishing, film and television content through Amazon Studios, and has been the owner of film and television studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer since March 2022. It also produces consumer electronics—most notably, Kindle e-readers, Echo devices, Fire tablets, and Fire TVs.
Amazon has been criticized for customer data collection practices,[19] a toxic work culture,[20] tax avoidance,[21][22] and anti-competitive behavior.[23][24]

Shopify Inc. is a Canadian multinational e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. The company reported that it had more than 2,000,000 businesses in approximately 175 countries using its platform as of December 2022, geographically dispersed as follows: 55% of North America, 25% of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, 15% of Asia Pacific, Australia and China and 5% of Latin America (Mexico and South America).[5][6][7] According to BuiltWith, 1.58 million websites run on the Shopify platform as of 2021.[8][9] According to W3Techs, 4.4% of the top 10 million websites use Shopify.[10] The total gross merchandise volume exceeded US$197 billion for calendar 2022.[1] As of July 2022, Shopify is among the top 20 largest publicly traded Canadian companies by market capitalization.[11]
Shopify was founded in 2006 by Tobias Lütke and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Dissatisfied with the existing e-commerce products on the market, Lütke, a computer programmer by trade, instead built his own.[12][13][14] Lütke used the open source web application framework Ruby on Rails to build Snowdevil's online store and launched it after two months of development.[15][16] The Snowdevil founders launched the platform as Shopify in June 2006.[15] Shopify created an open-source template language called Liquid, which is written in Ruby and used since 2006.[17]
In June 2009, Shopify launched an application programming interface (API) platform and App Store. The API allows developers to create applications for Shopify online stores and then sell them on the Shopify App Store.[18]
Walmart Inc.
Walmart Inc. ( /ˈwɔːlmɑːrt/; formerly Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.) is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets (also called supercenters), discount department stores, and grocery stores in the United States, headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas.[10] The company was founded by brothers Sam and James "Bud" Walton in nearby Rogers, Arkansas in 1962 and incorporated under Delaware General Corporation Law on October 31, 1969. It also owns and operates Sam's Club retail warehouses.[11][12]
As of October 31, 2022, Walmart has 10,586 stores and clubs in 24 countries, operating under 46 different names.[2][3][4] The company operates under the name Walmart in the United States and Canada, as Walmart de México y Centroamérica in Mexico and Central America, and as Flipkart Wholesale in India. It has wholly owned operations in Chile, Canada, and South Africa. Since August 2018, Walmart held only a minority stake in Walmart Brasil, which was renamed Grupo Big in August 2019, with 20 percent of the company's shares, and private equity firm Advent International holding 80% ownership of the company. They eventually divested their shareholdings in Grupo Big to French retailer Carrefour, in transaction worth R$7 billion and completed on June 7, 2022.[13]
Walmart is the world's largest company by revenue, with about US$570 billion in annual revenue, according to the Fortune Global 500 list in October 2022.[14] It is also the largest private employer in the world with 2.2 million employees. It is a publicly traded family-owned business, as the company is controlled by the Walton family. Sam Walton's heirs own over 50 percent of Walmart through both their holding company Walton Enterprises and their individual holdings.[15] Walmart was the largest United States grocery retailer in 2019, and 65 percent of Walmart's US$510.329 billion sales came from U.S. operations.[16][17]
Shopee Pte. Ltd., doing business as Shopee, is a Singaporean multinational technology company specialising in e-commerce. It is a subsidiary company of Sea Limited. It was launched in 2015 in Singapore, before its global expansion.[3]
As of 2021, Shopee is considered the largest e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia with 343 million monthly visitors. It also serves consumers and sellers across countries in East Asia and Latin America who wish to purchase and sell their goods online.[4][5]
History[edit]
In February 2015, Shopee launched in Singapore as a mobile-centric marketplace where users can browse, shop and sell products.[6] The asset-light platform is integrated with logistical and payment support, and claims to make online shopping easy and secure for both buyers and sellers.[7][8]
The app-based platform launched a website to compete with other e-commerce companies such as Coupang, Lazada, Tokopedia and AliExpress. To differentiate itself, Shopee offers online shopping security through its own escrow service called Shopee Guarantee,[9] which can be used to withhold payments from sellers until buyers have received their orders.[10]
On 3 September 2019, Shopee officially opened its six-storey regional headquarters at Singapore Science Park. The new building spans 244,000 square feet (22,700 m2) of space, which can accommodate 3,000 employees and is six times larger than Shopee's previous headquarters at Ascent Building. The building was leased by WeWork before it was relinquished to Shopee.[11][12]
Shopee has yet to turn profitable despite increasing its gross profit margin year-on-year in the first half of 2022, attributed to faster growth in transaction-based fees and advertising income. Coupled with rising inflation and interest rates as well as setbacks on its internationalisation plans, Shopee laid off staff across multiple markets in June 2022, including employees from Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. ShopeePay and ShopeeFood were also reported to be facing cuts.[13]
On 15 September 2022, Sea's CEO, Forrest Li sent a memo to all employees that outlined cost-cutting measures to be taken by the company to achieve "self-sufficiency". The measures include restrictions on business expenses, and Shopee's top executives will also temporarily forgo compensation.[14] Another round of job cuts was also announced, which affected employees in Singapore, Indonesia, and China.[15]
Shopee started as a consumer-to-consumer (C2C) marketplace but it pivoted into a C2C and business-to-consumer (B2C) hybrid model.[16]
The company partners with over 70 courier service providers across markets it serves to provide logistical support for users.[17] In Singapore, Shopee collaborates with logistics startup Ninja Van for item pickup and delivery.[18] Other delivery partners in the region include Pos Malaysia and Pos Indonesia.[19][20] Shopee also partnered with Delhivery and Ecom Express for deliveries in India before it exited the domestic market.[21]
In its early phases of growth, Shopee offered subsidies and free shipping to its users while delivery services were still expensive in the areas it serves.[22
As of 2019, Shopee's app has recorded 200 million downloads. Gross orders also grew 92.7% to 246.3 million in Q2 2019, compared to 127.8 million a year ago. Its gross merchandise value (GMV) also surged 72.7% to US$3.8 billion in Q2 19, compared to US$2.2 billion a year ago.[23]
According to a report by iPrice in Q2 2019, Shopee was the top shopping app base on monthly active users, total downloads and website visits, ahead of its competitors, Lazada and Tokopedia.[24] These GMV claims led to backlash from Lazada. Lazada's former CEO, Max Bittner asserted that GMV numbers can be easily inflated "by subsidy schemes and history shows that GMV falls away as unhealthy subsidies are removed."[25]
In Malaysia, Shopee became the third most visited e-commerce portal in Q4 2017, overtaking Lelong, and replaced Lazada as the top app on iOS and Google Play app stores.[26]
Among consumers in Indonesia, a survey conducted in December 2017 revealed that Shopee is the top shopping platform for Indonesian mothers (73%), ahead of Tokopedia (54%), Lazada (51%) and Instagram (50%).[27]
In 2019, Shopee entered the Latin America market when it launched a localised site in Brazil. It later started operations in Mexico, Chile and Colombia in 2021. In September 2021, Shopee introduced its marketplace in Poland. Launches in Spain and France followed over the next two months.[4][28] Shopee exited France and Spain on 6 March and 17 June 2022 respectively, leaving only Poland with operations in Europe.[29][30] Eventually, Shopee left Europe with an announcement of closure of its Polish operations on 12 January 2023.[31]
Shopee started operations in South Korea as of 2020 to help local merchants reach customers in markets where the former operates. However, Shopee does not have a consumer-facing platform in South Korea.[32]
In November 2021, Shopee entered the Indian market with a soft launch.[4] It clocked 100,000 orders a day and has over one million app installations on the Google Play Store in India.[21] On 29 March 2022, just five months after the launch, Shopee ceased its operations in India. The website and app also went offline in India as of 31 May 2022.[33]
For Q2 2022, Shopee recorded US$1.7 billion in quarterly revenue, higher than the combined revenue of Alibaba Group's international businesses: Lazada, AliExpress, Trendyol and Daraz.[34]
In September 2022, Shopee ended its local operations in Chile, Colombia and Mexico, but would continue to serve customers in these countries through a cross-border model. Shopee exited Argentina entirely on 8 September 2022 after facing stiff competition with Mercado Libre.[35][36]
In 2016, Shopee launched an initiative called Shopee University, a series of workshops and tutorials to aid local entrepreneurs and businesses in setting up their online businesses in the Philippines.[37]
In 2017, Shopee launched Shopee Mall with 200 brands in Singapore and the Philippines. The dedicated portal features thousands of products sold by leading brands and retailers in the region. Shopee Mall was created to offer a more diverse online shopping experience, and to better cater to larger brands looking to pursue an omni-channel approach.[38][39]
In 2018, Shopee launched the China Marketplace portal that offers shoppers easy access to products from Chinese merchants, without any shipping and agent fees in Singapore and the Philippines. The portal competes with Lazada's Taobao Collection option.[40][41]
In 2021, Shopee launched a social media customer service arm in the Philippines, known as Shopee Cares PH.[42] The same year, Shopee launched a food delivery service in Indonesia called ShopeeFood, in partnership with over 500 merchants.[43]
On 10 August 2022, cloud-based e-commerce company ChannelAdvisor announced that it will integrate with Shopee to allow its users to reach new customers by "extending their multichannel commerce strategies to new markets in the Asia Pacific region, while leveraging the efficiencies of a centralised platform".[44]
In 2018, Shopee appointed South Korean girl group Blackpink as its inaugural regional brand ambassador, as part of its partnership with YG Entertainment. Bambam from South Korean boy band Got7 was also appointed as the brand ambassador in Thailand in October of the same year.[45]
In 2019, Shopee appointed professional footballer Cristiano Ronaldo as its regional brand ambassador. The partnership was announced in line with Shopee's signature annual shopping event, 9.9 Super Shopping Day.[46]
In the Philippines, Shopee has engaged twelve local brand ambassadors: Anne Curtis, Kim Chiu, Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, singer Jose Mari Chan, boxer/former senator Manny Pacquiao, as well as television personalities Sarah Geronimo, Kris Aquino, Willie Revillame, sisters Toni & Alex Gonzaga and Vice Ganda.
In August 2020, Gurmit Singh became Shopee's first Singaporean brand ambassador and reprised his character as Phua Chu Kang from a Singaporean sitcom for the role.[47] Mark Lee was appointed as Shopee's next ambassador in May 2021.[48]
In Indonesia, Shopee has recruited several brand ambassadors: singers Didi Kempot, Nella Kharisma, Via Vallen, Rizky Febian, Syahrini, rock band Slank, actor Maxime Bouttier, actress Prilly Latuconsina, former JKT48 member Melody Nurramdhani Laksani, and comedian Tukul Arwana. South Korean boy group Stray Kids took over as brand ambassador of Shopee in Indonesia for the 11.11 Big Sale and 12.12 Birthday Sale.[49][50][better source needed] In addition, soap opera actor and actress Arya Saloka and Amanda Manopo from RCTI soap opera Ikatan Cinta were signed as Shopee's local brand ambassadors in 2021.[51] The same year, actor and martial artist Joe Taslim became Shopee's local brand ambassador for the 9.9 Super Shopping Day,[52]
In June 2021, BtoB was appointed as the official ambassador for Shopee's K-Collection, a Korean brand exhibition where 50 domestic small and medium-sized enterprises introduced their products directly through Shopee Live across Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, to attract K-pop fans to become customers.[53]
In 2022, singer Nassar Sungkar took part in promotions for Shopee's SPayLater in Indonesia.[54][better source needed] Singer Lesti Kejora and actor-husband Rizky Billar was also signed as local brand ambassadors for the 4.4 Sambut Ramadan Sale.[55] Internet celebrity couple Fuji An and Thariq Halilintar took part in ambassadorial work for Shopee Video in mid-2022.[56] In October 2022, singer Happy Asmara became the brand ambassador for the Shopee 11.11 Big Sale campaign in Indonesia.[57] In March 2023, comedian Komeng and singer Wika Salim signed as local brand ambassadors for the Shopee Big Ramadan Sale.[58] In June 2023, actor, TV personality, singer, entrepreneur and internet celebrity Raffi Ahmad became the local brand ambassadors for the 7.7 ShopeeLive Bombastis Sale campaign.[59]

Lazada Group (t/a Lazada) is an international e-commerce company and one of the largest e-commerce operators in Southeast Asia, with over 10,000 third-party sellers as of November 2014, and 50 million annual active buyers as of September 2019.[3][4][5][needs update]
Backed by Rocket Internet, Maximilian Bittner founded Lazada in 2012 as a marketplace platform that sells inventory to consumers from its own warehouses.[1] Lazada modified its business model the following year to allow third-party retailers to sell their products on its platform too.[citation needed] The marketplace accounted for 65% of the company's sales in 2014.[6][needs update]
Lazada operates in six countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.[7] The company raised over $685 million from investors such as Tesco, Temasek, Summit Partners, JPMorgan Chase, and Kinnevik AB, before Alibaba Group acquired a controlling stake in April 2016 to support its international expansion plans.[8][9][10][11][12][13]
Often, Lazada is compared to companies in Southeast Asia with a similar e-commerce platform, such as Shopee, Tokopedia, and Bukalapak.[14][15]
In 2012, Maximilian Bittner founded Lazada with the intention of establishing an Amazon-like business model in Southeast Asia, to take advantage of the nascent online consumer market and Amazon's weak presence in the region.[16][17] Lazada's e-commerce websites soft launched in 2012, before iOS and Android mobile apps for its platform were launched in June the following year.[18][19]
The company commenced operations in Singapore in May 2014, where it is currently headquartered.[20][21] In 2014, Lazada recorded $152.5 million in net operating losses, with net revenues of $154.3 million, although the percentage of losses—relative to gross merchandise value—was lower than the previous year due to growth in marketplace sales to $384 million that year, compared to $95 million in 2013.[22][23]
Lazada faced challenges in 2015, when consumer preference for brick and mortar shopping was high. Less than 1% of people shopped online, compared to the international average of 10% at that time. This meant that Lazada had to tackle issues associated with the lack of credit cards, the concomitant requirement for cash on delivery systems, and the need for reliable delivery—especially in rural regions.[24]
In March 2016, Lazada claimed it had become the largest e-commerce player in Southeast Asia, after recording $1.36 billion in annual gross merchandise value across the six markets it operates in.[25]
In September 2018, the company introduced LazMall on its platform to encourage its users to purchase from authentic brands. New services such as a 15-day return policy and next-day delivery options were also put in place.[26]
In December 2019, Lazada partnered with Citibank to launch a new credit card, first in Singapore, and subsequently in other countries.[citation needed]
