Starting August 9th for a week, Bo OX3LX will be active from Meteorite Island, NA-134. Looking at the IOTA Directory, it appears this particular island within the group has never been on air before. (NA-134 is quite rare in itself). The island is located at 76° 1′ 10.92″ N,

TUVALU, T2. Until August 7—or possibly the 14th—Aki (JK1JXZ) is operating as T2JK from

Funafuti Island (IOTA OC-015). Read the very pessimistic article at the bottom of the bulletin.

EL SALVADOR, YS. From August 7 to 14, Rikk is operating as YS/WE9G from El Sunzal.

AZERBAIJAN, 4J, 4K. Until August 8, Jan is operating as 4K/DL4XT from Baku.

Until August 10, the callsign CR60A is active to mark the 60th anniversary of the 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril)—a suspension bridge for road and rail traffic spanning the Tagus River in Lisbon, connecting the city of Almada to Lisbon. Inaugurated on August 6, 1966, as the Salazar Bridge, it was later renamed the 25th of April Bridge to commemorate the day of the Carnation Revolution.

the "heart of India."

PORTUGAL, CT. Until August 16, the special callsign CR5VP is being used for the "Volta"

(Tour of Portugal cycling race).

SAINT MARTIN, FS / SINT MAARTEN, PJ7. From August 16 to 18, Mike K5TMW and his

wife are celebrating their 50th anniversary. Mike will activate a few POTA references

on both sides of the island using the callsigns FS/K5TMW and PJ7/K5TMW. They may

subsequently travel to Anguilla (VP2E) and Saint Barthélemy (FJ).

ARMENIA, EK. On August 17, a new special callsign, EK0YOTA, will go on the air for

the YOTA ("Youth On The Air") program, operated by EK6ONL, EK6RF, EK6OTK, and EK6OMZ. FRANCE, F. From August 19 to 22, Fabien will operate as F4GYM/P from Pilier Island (IOTA EU-064), an uninhabited island off the port of L'Herbaudière, north of Noirmoutier Island (Department 85, Vendée).

ITALY, I. From August 20 to 24, Luca will operate as IA5/IW2LUY from Elba Island (IOTA EU-028).

ICELAND, TF. From August 20 to 26, the special callsign TF5SS will be used during the Scout Jamboree in the municipality of Hamrar, Akureyri.

TANZANIA, 5H. In late August/early September, Eyal 4X1RE will operate as 5H2RE (SSB) and Dov 4Z4DX

… South Africa’s first female amateur radio operator,

Iris Hayes ZS2AA, obtained her license thanks to a simple letter…

When her children were very young, she could not leave them alone on the farm; this need

to stay at home turned her into an avid Shortwave Listener (SWL). One day, while scanning the 40-meter band, she

heard two amateur radio operators talking. They mentioned they would be delighted to receive a reception

report from anyone who could hear them; Iris obliged. Her report was confirmed on air, and

the operators suggested she learn Morse code to become the first woman

in South Africa to hold a station license.

That was all the motivation Iris needed; she immediately began her training. She learned the code "the

hard way," using a Scout manual and singing lullabies to her children in the rhythm of dots and

dashes. Her method paid off, despite her husband’s serious doubts about her sanity. She

applied for her license in 1937, and the call sign ZS2AA was born.

While amateur radio remains her primary passion, Iris also takes a keen interest in gardening,

music, and philately, with a particular fondness for "First Day Covers." Highly active

in the community, she chaired the local Red Cross branch for 22 years. She also serves

on the board of directors of the "Madeira Home" retirement center.

When South African female amateur radio operators decided to form a club, Iris added another

"first" to her list of achievements by becoming the founding president of the SAWRC. She also

sponsors an award for female amateur radio operators participating in SARL contests. Thanks to my wife Sylvie (F1PSH), who regularly passes on "YL-specific" information to me thanks to her subscription to the "Radio Damen" newsletter; I will be sure to publish some of it from time to time.

… Nauru is now becoming the "Republic of Naoero" …

Nauru has officially adopted the name "Republic of Naoero" (pronounced "now-roo" in the English style), thereby aligning with the spelling and pronunciation of its national language and marking a return to its traditional identity. In June, the United Nations updated this designation on its website. This change will also entail a modification of the country's international code—shifting from NRU to NRO—and its citizens will henceforth be referred to as "dei-Naoero" rather than "Nauruans." This will not alter the current C2 DXCC status, but only the name.

… Tuvalu, the “T2” DXCC entity, is vanishing …

This nation, made up of nine coral islands, is preparing for the complete evacuation of its population—not

due to war or a sudden natural disaster, but because of global warming, which is inexorably eating away

at its shores. Tuvalu’s story reads like a science-fiction scenario, yet it is unfolding in real life right now.

This nation of 11,000 people sits at a maximum elevation of just two meters above sea level—a

geographical position that is now turning into a death sentence! Its inhabitants are poised to lose their

homeland—a global first that dramatically illustrates the impact of global warming on the most

vulnerable populations. Once emptied of its people, the country is set to become the first purely “virtual”

state. Under the 2023 Falepili Union Treaty, Australia is opening its doors to 280 Tuvaluans annually via a

groundbreaking “climate visa,” allowing them to settle permanently in Australia with full Australian

citizenship rights! Kudos to the country for this humanitarian initiative! It stands in stark contrast to the

unacceptable, inhumane attitude of certain nations that would—or indeed already do—close their doors

to this type of refugee.
